\maketitle

In the frame of our collaboration the two universities in Szeged and
Ljubljana the first decade of the 21st century we decided to organize
a conference which set the target to bring the theory and the practice
closer to each other. The first conference was organized in 2008 under
the name of the \emph{First Mini Conference on Theoretical Computer
Science}. This conference was successful and we decided to organize
new conferences regularly. Since in meantime the conferences became
more and more popular and researchers from several countries decided
to take part on our conferences we “renamed” the conference to MATCOS
(\emph{\textbf{M}iddle European Conference on \textbf{A}pplied
  \textbf{T}heoretical \textbf{CO}mputer \textbf{S}cience}) alluding
to the increased challenging. Between the harmony of the theory and
the practice we also highlighted the cooperation and dialogue between
senior and junior researchers. So, we always organized separate
sessions for PhD students. In the programs it was already custom, the
first day was devoted student papers, invited talk and some of the
regular papers.

Among these conferences the last one was organized in 2016, and from
the presented talks the programme committee decided to invite nine
papers for a special issue of Informatica. All papers were rigorously
reviewed. The papers reflect the general spirit of the conference as
they go from very theoretical to a very practical ones.
